Nebraska-Omaha to join Summit League

Nebraska-Omaha will join the Summit League on July 1.

The school announced its decision to reclassify from Division II to Division I, and drop wrestling and football as sponsored sports, on March 13.

The Mavericks will begin competition in the Summit League during 2012-13, with full membership beginning in 2015-16, when the reclassification process is complete.

The invitation to join the Summit League was extended after league officials made a site visit to the school earlier this month.

Between 2012-15, Nebraska-Omaha will be eligible for league championships in women’s cross country, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s golf. The men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s tennis teams will participate in the Summit League regular season and be eligible for championships when full Division I membership is obtained.

“The academic profile of the university and its history of athletics success are both outstanding qualities and will provide an excellent fit with our league,” said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple.
